The U.S. Embassy in Brazil published a social media post defending the U.S. government’s self-deportation program, launched by President Donald Trump in April of this year.
“If you’re in the U.S. illegally, do as E.T. did: it’s time to call home,” the post reads, referencing the 1982 Steven Spielberg film. The Trump administration is offering a $1,000 stipend, to illegal immigrants who voluntarily leave the country, in addition to travel expenses and the waiver of any fines “for not leaving sooner.”
“Illegal immigrants who request assistance will have a timely departure arranged for them. The CBP Home app allows illegal aliens to plan their return, including the opportunity to depart in a timely manner—enabling illegal aliens to complete work, study, and personal matters and arrange their return in an orderly and legal manner,” the website states.
In parallel with the self-deportation program, the government embassy is seeking candidates to work as immigration agents to meet the deportation quota established by the president. Former agents are being invited to return to service and are eligible for bonuses of up to $50,000.
