Trump says Lula can call him ‘at any time’ and that he ‘loves the Brazilian people’

In a press conference this Friday (1st), US President Donald Trump said he is willing to negotiate the tariffs that are, in principle, imposed on Brazil and that President Lula can call him “at any time.”

“He can talk to me whenever he wants. We’ll see what happens, I love the Brazilian people,” he concluded by stating that “the people who govern Brazil did the wrong thing.”

The two leaders have not directly discussed the tariffs or met since Trump took office in January.

In recent weeks, after the American threatened the country with higher tariffs, Lula said that his counterpart cannot be a “world emperor,” that he will double down, and that he is lying when justifying the economic measures.

This Friday, Finance Minister Fernando Haddad stated that Brazil’s goal remains to build stronger partnerships with the United States. In an interview with journalists in Brasília, Haddad said that there are options in the domestic market for some of the products previously shipped to the US, and that it is possible to strengthen ties between the two countries “as long as it is beneficial for both sides.”

The minister emphasized that, despite the current leadership in the US, Brazil will continue to seek a constructive relationship, guided by national interest and long-term ties.
