An American who moved to Russia to escape what he called ‘LGBT+ indoctrination’ in the US ended up being sent to the front lines of the war against Ukraine. Derek Huffman, 46, from Texas, moved with his wife and three daughters in search of a “safer environment aligned with Christian values,” but now the conservative’s dream has turned into a nightmare.
The move was made possible through the “Shared Values” visa program, created by the Russian government to attract foreigners opposed to what President Vladimir Putin calls “destructive neoliberal ideology.”
Seeking to live away from “progressive ideologies,” Derek Huffman was enlisted in the Russian Armed Forces with the promise of working as a welder and war correspondent, without going to the front lines. However, despite having no military experience or fluency in Russian, he ended up being sent to a frontline area in Ukraine.
The family, now facing financial difficulties, was left to ask for prayers on social media. According to his wife, Derek Huffman had to pay for military equipment out of his own pocket and did not receive the promised pay after a month of service.
The Huffman family settled in a village that attracts conservative foreigners dissatisfied with the Western lifestyle. Reports suggest that the final straw for the move came when their daughter learned about gender diversity at school, which prompted the radical decision.
Derek reportedly enlisted primarily to expedite the family’s Russian citizenship and obtain a financial bonus. But what was supposed to be a secure position turned into an imminent threat to his life. His wife, DeAnna, has denounced on social media that her husband is being used as a common soldier, even after assurances that he would not be directly involved in combat.
