The Donald Trump administration in the United States sanctioned Supreme Federal Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes on Wednesday (30) under the Magnitsky Act, used to punish foreigners. The decision was published by the U.S. Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control.

According to the U.S. government, all of Alexandre de Moraes‘s potential assets in the U.S. are frozen, as are any companies linked to him. The minister is also prohibited from conducting transactions with U.S. citizens and companies—using U.S.-branded credit cards, for example.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent directly mentioned an alleged “witch hunt” targeting former President Jair Bolsonaro by the minister.

“Alexandre de Moraes has taken upon himself the role of judge and jury in an illegal witch hunt against citizens and companies of the United States and Brazil,” Bessent said. “Moraes is responsible for an oppressive campaign of censorship, arbitrary detentions that violate human rights, and politically motivated prosecutions—including against former President Jair Bolsonaro. Today’s action makes clear that Treasury will continue to hold accountable those who threaten U.S. interests and the freedoms of our citizens,” the secretary said in a statement.

On the 18th, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the revocation of US visas for Supreme Court justices and their relatives, naming Moraes by name.

To justify the measure, the US secretary cited the ongoing Supreme Court case against former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is charged with attempted coup d’état after losing the 2022 election to Lula (Workers’ Party).
