A ship skeleton that washed ashore among the dunes of the small island of Sanday, Scotland, after a storm in February 2024 was identified by scientists and locals as the remains of the Earl of Chatham, an 18th-century vessel that played a role in British military history and commercial whaling.
The identification is the result of a combination of advanced technology and community research. Archaeologist Ben Saunders of the British organization Wessex Archaeology emphasized that the involvement of local residents was essential to the success of the investigation.
“If it were elsewhere, there might not have been this collective effort to recover, study, and protect the remains of the vessel,” he stated.
