An unusual incident caught the attention of Venice, Florida, police last Saturday (July 19). A customer was arrested after setting fire to a gym and hiding naked in a tanning bed. The incident occurred at a Planet Fitness location and mobilized several Lee County Sheriff’s Office patrol cars.
According to police, the suspect, identified as Henry Antunez Avarado, 25, refused to leave the gym after closing time at midnight. When approached by an employee, he became agitated and began a series of completely unusual actions.
“On Saturday night, officers responded to a Planet Fitness incident after reports of a naked man running through the gym, climbing onto the ceiling, and attempting to start a fire in the bathroom,” the Sheriff’s Office reported. At the scene, officers found smoke coming from the men’s locker room, as well as several ripped-out ceiling panels.
Security camera footage showed the client wandering around the gym naked, entering and exiting rooms, lying in a hot tub, and even trying to hide. After disappearing from the cameras’ radar, a K-9 dog was called in to assist in the search. He was eventually located inside a tanning bed, still completely nude.
The suspect was handcuffed, wrapped in a towel, and taken to the police station, where he was charged with indecent exposure, arson, impersonation, and causing property damage over $1,000. The first hearing is scheduled for August 18th.
