US President Donald Trump said on Thursday (23) that he has imposed 50% tariffs on countries with which relations “have not been good.” Although not directly mentioned, Brazil is among them.
On July 9, Trump published a letter addressed to President Lula (Workers’ Party) announcing the application of 50% tariffs on all Brazilian products imported into the United States. He justified the measure with political and trade arguments. Read more below.
This Thursday, during an event in Washington, D.C., Trump stated that he established tariffs ranging from 15% to 50% to pressure other countries to open their markets.
In April, Trump released a list of all the countries that would receive reciprocal tariffs, in an episode that became known as the “tariff spree.” At the time, Brazil had been taxed at 10%. Lesotho faced a 50% tariff.
When announcing the 50% tariff on Brazil, Trump said the decision to increase the tariff was made “in part because of Brazil’s insidious attacks on free elections and fundamental violation of Americans’ free speech.”
